The SCA (Society for Cultural Anachonism), which as far as I know started as a Usenet group about 15 years ago, used to do just this sort of thing.. It was a very large club whose members would role-play life in the middle ages. I've lost touch with folk involved in such activities now but assume they got integrated into the various *Renaissance* fair's that seem to occur all over here. Each community seems to have one their vicinity that usually lasts for about a week (and some even longer).

I've no idea if SCA ever spread else where.

Cheers,
Pope

I don't know how to upload it here...so I have put it over on one of my web sites. It is a text file that is compressed as a zip file. I suspect everyone can unzip it. If not, let me know. You can grab it from: http://aeoliansystems.com/Troub.zip
It is a very small file. It also is about the poetry/period and is not the poetry, though it does have some.
Although it is from the Gothic period, it is not really gothic poetry. So this may be less than satisfying.

Poetry back then being Medieval or 1921? (Do I read up or down? ;-)
If you want 14th-15th Century in southern France, I can help. I am a variable cornucopia of factoids of the period. But even better, I can make available a book on the poetry of the Troubadors (assuming I can find it here on my computer). I believe it is a text document that was compiled by Project Gutenberg from an old (expired copyright, 1912) manuscript, making it in the public domain. I cannot attest to its veracity, however, as I have not had the time to read it.

TO ME THE POEMS THEY CAME UP WITH IN THEIR HEADS HAD ALOT TO DO WITH THE WAY THEIR UP BRINGINGS WERE COMPARED TO TODAYS. AND WHAT THEIR INNER FEELINGS WERE WITH THE JOURNEYS AND LIVES THEY LIVED.....................MOST ARE VERY INTERESTING TO US NOW A DAYS, THEY MAKE US REALLY THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY WERE THINKING AND GOING THROUGH AT THE TIME OF THEM WRITING THE POEMS WE READ.............. LIKE THE ONE THAT FOLLOWS THIS COMMENT

The poem

What's Become of the Punchers

What's become of the punchers
We rode with long ago?
The hundreds and hundreds of cowboys
We all of us used to know?

Sure, some were killed by lightning,
Some when the cattle run,
Others were killed by horses,
And some with the old six-gun.

Those that worked on the round-up,
Those of the branding-pen,
Those who went out on the long trail drive
And never returned again.

We know of some who have prospered,
We hear of some who are broke,
My old pardner made millions in Tampa,
While I've got my saddle in soak!

Sleeping and working together,
Eatin' old "Cussie's good chuck,"
Riding in all kinds of weather,
Playing in all kinds of luck;

Bragging about our top-hosses,
Each puncher ready to bet
His horse could outrun the boss's,
Or any old horse you could get!

Scott lies in Tularosa,
Elmer Price lies near Santa Fe,
While Randolph sits here by the fireside
With a "flat-face" on his knee.

'Gene Rhodes is among the high-brows,
A-writin' up the West,
But I know a lot of doin's
That he never has confessed!

He used to ride 'em keerless
In the good old days
When we both worked together
In the San Andres!

Building big loops we called "blockers,"
Spinning the rope in the air,
Never a cent in our pockets,
But what did a cow-puncher care?

I'm tired of riding this trail, boys,
Dead tired of riding alone—
B'lieve I'll head old Button for Texas,
Toward my old Palo Pinto home!

by Jack Thorp from Songs of the Cowboys, 1921 and included in Jack Thorp's Songs of the Cowboys

I'VE ALWAYS WONDERED IF THE POETRY BACK THEN WAS ANYTHING LIKE TODAY IF WAS MORE ROMANTIC OR EVEN IF HAD A TOUCH OF INSANITY, I MEAN AFTER ALL THERE ONLY WORDS..............RIGHT?
IMAGINE THE POWER OF THE WORDS THEY USED, I WANT TO FIND SOME POETRY FROM THEN AND I WANT TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS EVER TRIED TO WRITE SUCH POETRY..........IT HAS TO BE HARD........BUT LET ME KNOW YOUR VIEW.

THE DEMONS CALLED "ILLUMINATI"

TRAINED IN DARK OF SATANS WOMB,
THE ILLUMINATE ONES EXIT THEIR TOMB
TO SEAL THE FATE OF MODERN MAN,
TO TORTURE SOULS FOR THE FALLEN CLAN

EVIL POWERS CONTROLING US,
WE SCREAM FOR MERCY THROUGH THE DUST
THE WICKED REPTILES OF BIBLICAL DAYS
CONSUME OUR SOULS IN VIOLENT WAYS

THE RICH AND POWERFUL… Continue

SILENCE

THE GHOSTLY SILENCE OF A GIRL
AWAITING DEATH OR LIFE
THE PAINFUL MEMORY SHE MUST BARE
OF MURDER BY A KNIFE

SHE WAITS FOR HIM TO WAKE
HIS BODY STILL AND COLD
HER FATHER COMES TO BURY HIM
AND PUNISH HER WICKED SOUL

SHE HOLDS THE SHAME HER FATHER SAYS
FOR LOVING ONE SO YOUNG… Continue

A WASTELAND WITH NO END

HOW BITTER COLD, THIS WINTER TOLD THE YEAR 2009
FOR SOME WHO LIKE THE SNOWY WHITE INDEED IT WAS DIVINE
BUT STORIES OF THE EVIL THAT FILLS THE WORLD TODAY
WERE TOLD TO ME, BY A MAN, I STILL CAN HERE HIM SAY
THESE THINGS I TELL YOU ARE THE TRUTH SOME DAY YOU SOON SHALL SE… Continue

GOTHIC HORROR

HOW QUIET THE FACE OF GOTHIC HORROR
WHERE NO ONE HEARS THE SCREAMS
OF LIFE THATS SHATTERED IN AN INSTANT
THE DEADLY NIGHTMARE OF DREAMS
THOUGH NO ONE SEES THE PAIN INSIDE
THIS FACE THATS ALL BUT DIED
SHE IS THE LONLEY REPLICA
OF A LIFE THATS GONE A RYE
SO SADLY WE MUST LOOK ON… Continue
